What’s New

Spring Jazz Night and Farewell to Cleveland Bake Sale!

As you know, Cleveland High School will be torn down this summer. The Alumni Association is hosting a One Last Look Tour from 5:30–7:30 PM, giving the community one final chance to walk the halls and take in the memories — and we’ll be running a bake sale during the tour, right before the 7:30 PM concert.

This is a special addition to our usual two bake sales — a chance to celebrate the end of an era alongside the broader Cleveland community.

Please sign up here to donate sweet or savory baked goods and/or help serve.

Thank you, as always!

Gabe Headrick Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Cleveland Band community is honored to continue upholding the legacy of Gabe Headrick — beloved husband, father, and community member — through the Gabe Headrick Memorial Scholarship. Gabe’s love for his wife, Sally, and his son, Cooper, was at the center of everything he did, and his passion for music and the Cleveland Band community left a lasting impact on all who knew him. Whether through his musicianship, his encouragement of young artists, or his deep appreciation for the program that helped shape his son’s journey, Gabe believed in the power of music to connect and inspire.

Established in his honor, this scholarship recognizes graduating seniors who demonstrate both leadership and a genuine enthusiasm for music. It is a meaningful way to support students as they continue their musical pursuits beyond high school — just as Gabe supported the community that meant so much to his family. If the Cleveland Band Community has made an impact on you or a member of your family we hope that you consider making a donation to this fund to support our student leaders.

Mt Hood Jazz Festival 2026

Cleveland’s Jazz Lab and Jazz Ensemble will be performing at the Mt. Hood Community College Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 25. Please note that there is no school-provided transportation for this event — students should plan to arrive by private car.

Jazz Ensemble students should arrive no later than 12:30 PM, and Jazz Lab students no later than 1:30 PM. Storage will be available in the cafeteria area. Jazz Ensemble warms up at 2:30 PM and performs at 3:00 PM in the Visual Arts Theatre, while Jazz Lab warms up at 4:00 PM and performs at 4:30 PM in the Student Union. For a more detailed schedule, click here or search your email for “Mt Hood Jazz Festival Schedule” – Mr Riler sent more information back in March!

After performances, students will pack up and head to the College Theatre for the evening awards. Students are free to leave once the awards conclude at approximately 6:20 PM. Festival wristbands also provide access to all professional concerts that evening, including a featured performance by The Bad Plus at 7:30 PM—an excellent opportunity for students and families to enjoy some world-class jazz.

Friends of Cleveland Band – Board Positions Open for 2026–2027

Friends of Cleveland Band is beginning the process of building our board for the 2026–2027 school year, and we are looking for volunteers to step into several key roles. Open positions include President, Vice President, Co-Hospitality, and Fundraising as well as members at large and a Pie Coordinator Shadow. These roles are essential to supporting our students, coordinating events, and sustaining the strong band community we all value.

Serving on the board is a meaningful way to stay involved, support music education, and help ensure the continued success of the Cleveland Band program. If you’re interested in learning more about any of these positions, please reach out—we’re happy to answer questions and help you find a role that fits your interests and availability.

Volunteer Background Checks

Planning to volunteer with our band program? If you might have unsupervised contact with students (including as a field trip chaperone), PPS requires volunteers to complete a background check at https://www.pps.net/volunteer.

This quick process only needs to be completed once every three years and you may have already completed it if you have volunteered elsewhere in Portland Public Schools.
